Planning to fast for religious or personal reasons?
For someone with diabetes, it can be useful to discuss the plan with the treating healthcare professional before the fasting period begins.
Questions worth discussing include:
- Can I fast considering my current health and treatment?
- Will my medicine or insulin schedule need adjustment?
- How should glucose be monitored while fasting?
- What symptoms or glucose readings mean the fast should be stopped and medical advice sought?
- How should food and fluids be planned during non-fasting hours?
The answers are not the same for everyone. Diabetes type, current treatment, previous episodes of low or high glucose, other medical conditions and the nature and duration of fasting may all influence the plan.
At Kharghar Diabetes & Obesity Clinic, fasting-related questions can be discussed according to individual clinical circumstances.
Do not independently change prescribed medicine or insulin doses simply to accommodate a fast.
