Your previous HbA1c was one number. A few months later, it changed. Does that automatically mean your diabetes has improved or worsened?
Not necessarily.
HbA1c provides an indication of average blood glucose levels over approximately the preceding two to three months. It gives different information from a single glucose reading taken at one point in time.
Changes in eating patterns, physical activity, illness, medicines, body weight and other individual health circumstances may influence glucose patterns.
Instead of looking only at whether the number went up or down, it can be useful to consider the latest HbA1c alongside previous reports, current treatment and other relevant clinical findings.
At Dr. Apurva Gawai's Diabetes and Obesity Clinic, Kharghar, diabetes-related reports are reviewed according to individual clinical findings and ongoing health requirements.
A changing HbA1c is therefore a result to understand in context rather than interpret in isolation.
